Online Conferences on Sustainable Development and Value Chains in Tourism in Myanmar

How can tourism destinations in Myanmar be developed more sustainably in times of Covid-19 and how can regional value chains be promoted? These questions were the focus of two online conferences of the Myanmar Responsible Tourism Institute.

At both events Kai Partale gave the keynote presentations. The technical foundation was provided by the handbooks ‘Destination Management in Developing and Emerging Countries’ and ‘The Tourism Value Chain’, which he wrote on behalf of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). His lectures were supplemented by impulses from current practical projects on the topics of plastic avoidance and DMO development in Myanmar.

As expected, the moderated discussions that followed were strongly influenced by Covid-19 and the question of how to succeed in developing sustainable tourism structures and processes in Myanmar in the long term.

The online conferences supported by Hanns-Seidel-Foundation are part of the event series ‘Tourism Destination Planning Academy’ of the Myanmar Responsible Tourism Institute. More than 30 representatives of the industry from the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, tourism organisations, tour operators and guides as well as the hotel industry participated in each event.
